Gallery 2424 is proud to present new works on canvas and Yupo by artist, curator, and editor Jon Witzky. On view from Friday, September 5 through Saturday, September 27, 2025, Witzky’s solo exhibition Disappearer embraces a brighter palette for his oil paintings. Acrid yellows, fiery pinks, and soft blues mask something darker roiling beneath the surface.
If there is a loose narrative in these paintings, it is one of a stranger moving through an imaginal realm, a space between the spiritual and the material where separate realities can seep into our lives. These works depict unknown destinations and unclear experiences, something dark beside the light. Witzky’s paintings often seem on the verge of slipping away, and these new works feel more elusive than ever. Though there is an emotional and narrative underpinning to many of the pieces in the exhibition, the paint, and the act of painting itself, remains a vital character in these works.
In Sheltering Sky, an angelic being emerges from an indeterminate ground like a sand dune; her eyes drift, floating, down to the bottom of the canvas. In the title work, Disappearer, Death hangs like a cloud over supersaturated colors forming an abstract landscape. There is an anxious, apocalyptic undertone to the works: a secret revelation, a calm before a cataclysm.
Forget the future, these times are such a mess
